EBS Multi-Attach Infographic

EBS Multi-Attach

Attach a single Provisioned IOPS SSD volume to multiple EC2 instances within the same Availability Zone.

The Prerequisites

Nitro System

Instances must be built on the AWS Nitro System to support Multi-Attach capabilities.

Volume Types

Exclusively available for io1 and io2 Provisioned IOPS SSD volumes.

Same AZ

All instances and the EBS volume must reside in the exact same Availability Zone.

How it Works

Concurrent Read/Write Access from Multiple Nodes

EBS Volume (io1/io2) EC2 Node 1 EC2 Node 2 EC2 Node 3 EC2 Node 4

Full Read/Write

Each attached instance has full read and write permissions to the shared volume.

Cluster-Awareness

Requires a cluster-aware file system (e.g., GFS2, OCFS2) to prevent data corruption.

Attachment Limit

Up to 16 Nitro-based instances can be attached to a single volume simultaneously.

Best Use Case

Ideal for Clustered Applications like Teradata or Windows Failover Clusters.

OS Support

Supported on Linux (Amazon Linux, Ubuntu, RHEL) and Windows Server.

Safety Warning

Standard file systems (EXT4, NTFS) are not supported as they are not cluster-aware.
